How we chose these pieces

HOW WE COMPARED

Research comparison based on exact US retailer listings checked October 22, 2026. Shopfest has not worn or independently tested these products. Pros and cons compare listed features, format, price and likely wardrobe or routine use; brand performance claims remain attributed. Prices exclude tax and shipping.

Trend context: current editorial attention, with older sources labeled where used. Direct TikTok and Instagram posts could not be reliably inspected. Social references are indirect; no view counts, growth claims or new Hype Scores are assigned.

A comeback worth identifying correctly

NewBeauty’s October launch coverage gives O-Gloss a timely reason to revisit the category. The product here is the current O-Gloss pH Plumping Lip Gloss, not the old Intuitive formula. Nostalgia can start the conversation, but it does not establish that a new version will feel or perform like the one someone remembers.

The color decision comes first

Smashbox’s $26 option begins clear and develops pink, making the changing color its distinguishing feature. Rhode’s $20 Peptide Lip Tint in Toast has a fixed rose-taupe tint. Natural lip color still affects the visible result, but the named tint gives you a clearer starting point if you are building a particular makeup palette.

The same size, different priorities

Both selected listings contain 10 ml. Rhode is $6 less, so the price difference is straightforward without guessing at how long either tube lasts. The exact Toast variant we checked is Scented Toast with a crème-brûlée scent. It should not be confused with an unscented variant. Scent preference is a legitimate reason to reject an otherwise appealing shade.

Keep the claims in proportion

Smashbox describes plumping and lasting shine; Shopfest has not independently measured either. Ingredient stories, including vitamins or peptides, do not allow us to infer a clinical result. Neither of these products is the same kind of application as a dedicated stain. If low-maintenance color matters more than shine, read our Wonderskin-versus-Benetint comparison before deciding.

Predictable tint or a changing result?

Choose a fixed tint when you want to plan your lip color around an outfit or another makeup product. Toast offers a named shopping shade, although the result still depends on your natural lip color and how much you apply. O Gloss is a different proposition: its changing color is part of the experience. A photograph of someone else’s result is not a shade guarantee.

Before buying, decide whether you actually enjoy that variability. If you want a dependable neutral for a work bag, the fixed tint is the clearer starting point. If the changing effect is what interests you, compare that feature rather than assuming either formula provides better care or longer wear. We have not measured those outcomes.

Product choices, recorded prices, advantages, and tradeoffs
Product & priceBest forProsCons
Smashbox O-Gloss pH Plumping Lip Gloss$26.00 at SmashboxA pink color-changing gloss
  • Clear-to-pink color change is the distinguishing feature
  • Current relaunched formula; official page lists vitamins C and E
  • Less shade control than a fixed tinted gloss
  • Six-hour shine and plumping are manufacturer claims, not Shopfest tests
rhode Peptide Lip Tint — Scented Toast$20.00 at rhodeA fixed rose-taupe tinted finish
  • A fixed rose-taupe shade offers more predictable color selection
  • Costs $6 less than the same 10 ml O-Gloss size
  • This exact variant is scented creme brulee; unsuitable if you prefer unscented
  • Glossy tint is not marketed as a transfer-proof stain

THE SHOPFEST DECISION

What we would choose—and why.

Pick O-Gloss for the clear-to-pink effect and the experience of the relaunch. Pick rhode Toast for a selected rose-taupe tint and a lower price, provided you want this scented version. We cannot name a wear-time winner without a controlled wear test.
